the Consultant and the Pregnant Midwife~ a GEM~

in the Middle of snowstorm consultant Jake Blackwell finds a pretty woman in need of his "rescue" he ends up with an unexpected guest~ mean while he is become very very attracted to the beautiful woman called Miranda~ who is his "guest" when she disppears he is upset. The next day he finds MIRANDA is the midwife in his department and she is also about 6 months pregnant~ the fun is having a woman who trusts NO one and has been hurt in the passed having the GOOD Dr. HUNK suddenly making all the right moves~ this is a wonderful Christmas story and one of my favorites by Sarah Morgan. Jake has his choice of any woman but decides he will not allow any more time to pass before he makes Miranda know just how he feels~ I GIVE IT A SOLID 10 OUT OF 10 FOR MEDICAL ROMANCES, EXCELLENT PLOT AND CHARACTERS~ MOVES ALONG NICELY.

In this book, Tim Hodgkinson proposes a theory of aesthetics and music grounded in the boundary between nature and culture within the human being. His analysis discards the conventional idea of the human being as an integrated whole in favor of a rich and complex field in which incompatible kinds of information -- biological and cultural -- collide. It is only when we acknowledge the clash of body and language within human identity that we can understand how art brings forth the special form of subjectivity potentially present in aesthetic experiences.

As a young musician, Hodgkinson realized that music was, in some mysterious way, "of itself" -- not isolated from life, but not entirely continuous with it, either. Drawing on his experiences as a musician, composer, and anthropologist, Hodgkinson shows how when we listen to music a new subjectivity comes to life in ourselves. The normal mode of agency is suspended, and the subjectivity inscribed in the music comes toward us as a formative "other" to engage with. But this is not our reproduction of the composer's own subjectivation; when we perform our listening of the music, we are sharing the formative risks taken by its maker. To examine this in practice, Hodgkinson looks at the work of three composers who have each claimed to stimulate a new way of listening: Pierre Schaeffer, John Cage, and Helmut Lachenmann.

Chinese governments have long struggled to maintain ecological stability along the Yellow River, undertaking ambitious programs of canal and dike construction to mitigate the effects of recurrent droughts and floods. But particularly during the Maoist years the North China Plain was radically re-engineered to utilize every drop of water for irrigation and hydroelectric generation. As David A. Pietz shows, Maoist water management from 1949 to 1976 cast a long shadow over the reform period, beginning in 1978. Rapid urban growth, industrial expansion, and agricultural intensification over the past three decades of China’s economic boom have been realized on a water resource base that was acutely compromised, with effects that have been more difficult and costly to overcome with each passing decade. Really good environmental history

David Pietz has provided a superior history of water management in northern China. In spite of the "modern" in the title, he spends over 100 pages on a notably judicious and incisive history of water management from prehistory on down to Qing. He provides some really fascinating lore on water engineering in the 1930s, usually a decade rather shorted by environmental historians. He then settles down to the long and complex history of water management under Mao and the later Communist leaders, ending with problems for the future. China is notoriously not only short of water but prone to epic droughts and floods, but the story of what the Chinese have done with that is the exciting narrative. (It is pretty well summed up by a Chinese saying: " Freezing to death, stand straight and face the wind; starving to death, never bend.")
What is special about this book is Pietz' sensible, judicious, and informed take on key issues, from the rise of irrigation 3000 years ago to the controversies over big dams today. In an age of rather overheated rhetoric about China (pro and con) this is refreshing; more to the point, it makes this book particularly valuable.

A must read for the study of engineered rivers in arid lands

I add a few comments to Anderson's excellent review: Pietz places 20th century water management in the Yellow River nicely in the context of modern reservoir construction worldwide, beginning with the Tennessee multipurpose model--energy production, flood control, irrigation, regional development. There is an insightful discussion of a much debated current issue: increasing flow in the Yellow by importing water from the Yangtze, hundreds of kilometers to the South. Problems arising as reservoirs age, such as the buildup of sediment, are covered, so is the emerging impact of climate change on river water volume. The significance of the book is highlighted in three number quoted by Pietz: China has 20 percent of the world's population, 9 percent of available land and 6 percent of available water.
