Social Determinants of Health: A Comparative Approach, by Alan Davidson

Social Determinants of Health: A Comparative Approach introduces the various elements that determine the health of individuals in their communities. The text takes a macro-level approach, focusing on population health rather than strictly on individual health. Social Determinants of Health focuses on "Anglo-American" countries-Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia-examining the commonalities and differences socially, economically, and politically.

The text begins by outlining the background, theory, and evidence for a population health perspective. This is followed by discussion of environmental factors, such as employment, housing, and diet, and social factors such as gender, support and well-being, and being an Aboriginal person. The text concludes with an overview of the social patterning of health-relevant behaviour and the politics of health-related policy. Written in an accessible manner, Social Determinants of Health further engages students by offering case studies and "Pause and Reflect" boxes, as well as end-of-chapter questions, suggested readings, and websites.

Review
"This is a highly readable text. The engagement with population health and research paradigms is a strong addition to a [social determinants of health] textbook and something that is currently missing in the field."
--Rachel Gorman, York University

"The text does a great job of synthesizing key areas of the literature. The tables, graphs, thought questions, learning objectives, and theory and policy sections are very useful for teaching an introductory SDH course."
--Elaine Power, Queen's University

Read this if you need answers to help solve the medical crisis.
By joyce walters
This is an excellent review of issues which affect individuals when they make medical and health maintenance choices. In today's environment of "the business of health care" it is wise to consider what happens to the patient when he or she leaves the medical clinic. Why do they take their prescribed medication? Why don't they return for their appointment? Do they have insurance? Did they call the doctor about their test results? All of these concerns are addressed very well within this publication.

Classical Arabic Literature: A Library of Arabic Literature Anthology, by Geert Jan Van Gelder

A major translation achievement, this anthology presents a rich assortment of classical Arabic poems and literary prose, from pre-Islamic times until the 18th century, with short introductions to guide non-specialist students and informative endnotes and bibliography for advanced scholars. Both entertaining and informative, Classical Arabic Literature ranges from the early Bedouin poems with their evocation of desert life to refined urban lyrical verse, from tender love poetry to sonorous eulogy and vicious lampoon, and from the heights of mystical rapture to the frivolity of comic verse. Prose selections include anecdotes, entertaining or edifying tales and parables, a fairy-tale, a bawdy story, samples of literary criticism, and much more. With this anthology, distinguished Arabist Geert Jan van Gelder brings together well-known texts as well as less familiar pieces new even to scholars. Classical Arabic Literature reveals the rich variety of pre-modern Arabic social and cultural life, where secular texts flourished alongside religious ones. This masterful anthology introduces this vibrant literary heritage—including pieces translated into English for the first time—to a wide spectrum of new readers.

Review

"Van Gelder's translations are pleasant and clear, which is no small feat, especially with poetry... A work that will be enjoyed by many scholars and lay readers."

-Letizia Osti,Middle East Literatures

"The translations of this volume are a marvel, and often a tour de force–precise, highly readable and evocative, with the benefit of well-honed use of iambic and other rhythmic devices. Though Van Gelder reminds us that he is not a native English speaker, his English strikes me as no less superlative than, say, Nabokov’s mastery of the language." -The National

“Promises to be an invaluable mine of knowledge for scholars and general readers who need an introduction to the universal appeal and validity of the enlightening and enlightened literary heritage of the Arabic-Islamic intellectual tradition.”-Journal of Islamic Studies

"Ranges over more than seven centuries, and flows with surprises and delights, aching love poems and weird, cruel fables, and Thomas Browneian reflections on the nature of Flies, or the relations between mystics and elephants, all beguilingly rendered and scrupulously commented."

-Marina Warner,Times Literary Supplement

“Geert Jan van Gelder has strung for us an attractive set of pearls—well selected, handsomely presented, readably translated, and helpfully annotated to guide the reading public gently into the world of a very bibliophilic civilization.”-Peter Webb,Times Literary Supplement

“The perfect collection to launch the Library of Arabic Literature—of interest to the scholar, the student, and the general reader. Its coverage is excellent, both in terms of historical sweep and generic variety.”

-Richard Sieburth, Professor of Comparative Literature, New York University

"Van Gelder succeeds in maintaining a high standard for literary translation… This anthology is remarkable in its attention to the intricate patterns of meter and rhyme in Arabic poetry and in its combination of familiar and unfamiliar texts. Highly recommended."-Choice

"A welcome anthology of classical Arabic verse and literary prose… Van Gelder's selections have been wisely and aptly made, his translations are elegant, and the whole exercise has been illuminated by his distinguished erudition."-Review of Middle East Studies

Statistics: A Bayesian Perspective, by Donald A. Berry

Appropriate for a one-term introductory statistics course, this text introduces statistical concepts and methods from a predominantly Bayesian perspective. It covers standard topics taking the Bayesian view that subjectivity is inevitable in science and that different conclusions from the same study are normal and stresses the advantages of this approach in scientific inference. It presents statistics as a means of integrating data into the scientific process and stresses data analysis and experimental design ideas early.

nice elementary text on Bayesian methods
By Michael R. Chernick
This is an excellent introductory text designed for a first course in statistics. It covers all the topics that are typically in a first course. However, all other texts at this level take the frequentist approach to inference. A few may have sections that introduce Bayesian ideas but the Bayesian approach is a paradigm for statistical inference and as such the approach should be incorporated in all statistical topics. Berry shows that this can be done without the student having to know calculus. To understand Bayesian methods the student mainly has to know that posterior probability = likelihood x prior probability. Berry provides a good list of references for those who want to pursue more advanced topics.
This book is unique. It demonstrate that statistics can be taught from the Bayesian approach in the very beginnning. This is much like what Noether did when he wrote an introductory text in statistics taking a strict nonparametric approach.

The text is loaded with exercises and the exposition is very clear. There are many useful and entertaining diagrams. Many examples are taken from real medical problems. Medicine is an area in which Berry has done a great deal of consulting and his experience shows in his examples. This should be the text to turn to if you want an introduction to the subject. If you know the basics and want more advanced treatment go to the references mentioned in Berry's preface.

Unsuitable as an introductory text, requiring advanced mathematical understanding
By David Reilly
As a primer on Bayesian statistics for an intermediate or advanced statistics course,
Donald Berry has written a fascinating an insightful guide for the reader who enjoys
algebraic calculation and mathematical proofs. However its claims that it is
designed as "an introductory textbook on statistics" is where the reader may
be deceived. In the preface, Berry writes "mathematical level of this book is
minimal with only an exposure to high school algebra expected".

There are many excellent textbooks introducing the subject of statistics,
and aimed at people with only high school algebraic experience - this book is not
one of them however. Instructors should read this text carefully, and completely,
before even considering assigning it as reading in an introductory course.

The book itself is incredibly dense, and often the problems contained within
require extensive knowledge of statistical calculations and probability theory.
Even as a graduate student who adores statistical techniques, this is heavy going.
That is not to say that it is completely inaccessible to the reader, and would
not be an appropriate introductory text for graduate study. The reader may find
it frustrating, however, going back and learning statistics from first principles,
but will gain some insight into Bayesian probability theory.

Additionally, the book requires the use of Minitab, and does not evaluate other alternate
computer methods of calculation. If you're happy to do calculations by hand, this book
may still be of use, but at a minimum it needs to be revised and computer calculations
discussed. There are many free or online Bayesian calculators available, which you
should explore before falling back to the books hand calculations.

You may also prefer some of the many Bayesian statistics books available designed for the beginner,
such as Introduction to Bayesian Statistics, Introduction to Applied Bayesian Statistics and Estimation for Social Scientists (Statistics for Social and Behavioral Sciences)

Excellent introduction.
By A Customer
This is a truly clear and thoughtful introduction to Bayesian statistics.Nothing is taken for granted as the author leads you through examples and concepts. This was my first introduction to Bayesian statistics, and Berry makes it seem so much more reasonable and closer to real research/real life than the artifice involved in other approaches.

Imagine your beloved pet in a laboratory having the newest shampoo poured down its throat to see how it would affect humans. Animals have feelings, so testing on them is torture. They have to experience a lot of different pain at different degrees. We share the planet with animals; we should respect them and not make them lab rats. Animals should not be used for medical research because the research process is harmful to the animal’s health and could result in their deaths. In this paper I talk about the various animal testing methods and the cruelty inflicted on these poor animals. Read this and spread the word.

RANGER'S APPRENTICE BOOK TWO : The Burning Bridge, by John Flanagan

This time the stakes are higher. You have no rights, Morgarath. You're a rebel and a traitor and a murderer. Surrender now and your men will be spared. That's the only right I grant you. "I claim the right of trial by single combat!" Morgarath shouted back, ignoring the King's words. Then he continued contemptuously; "Or are you too cowardly to accept a challenge?"

Excellent series
By kent
A terrific series. My son started reading them and asked me to do so as well. I was skeptical but by about 20 pages into the first volume I was hooked. I have now devoured all 9 of them, and may well go back and read them all again in a year or two.

The main characters begin as children but grow up quickly throughout the series. Unlike too many "young adult" books, the adults are more interesting than the children, and the children realize that becoming an adult is something to strive for rather than resist.

All of the books are very funny as well as exciting. The "good guys" all have a wry sense of humor (obviously the author's as well), while the "bad guys" are typically overbearing and too serious. Children also fail to grasp the humor; growing up is shown as (in part) a process of coming to understand (and use) a rather dry wit with one's friends.

These are "sword and sorcery" type books, except that there doesn't seem to be any sorcery! Several people claim to have magical type powers, but the powers seem to all be fake, and the people who claim them are all bad guys. Several strange religious prophets also turn out to be hucksters.

The battle scenes are realistically told (though the skills of the protagonists are not always realistic). Death is not whitewashed; bones break and blood spurts and it HURTS. There is a realism to the entire series that is a wonderful change from typical "fantasy" fare.

There is no sex and only minimal time is given to love. The major virtues and concerns of the characters are honor, patience, friendship, a skeptical intelligence, and hard work. The characters struggle to master themselves and become better people.

In short: realistic, serious, and honest books about growing up -- all in a fun "epic fantasy" package. Highly recommended.

The ranger's apprentice
By E. A Solinas
Imagine if the Rangers from "Lord of the Rings" took apprentices -- what kind of life would that be?

John Flanagan does a decent job answering the question in the first book of the Ranger's Apprentice series, "The Ruins of Gorlan." Besides setting up the medieval Anglo backdrop, Flanagan also spins up a solid fantasy story with plenty of monsters, weapons, a likable pair of teenage heroes, and a growing menace from a rarely-seen villain making a comeback.

On Choosing Day, Will hopes to be selected for Battleschool -- but he's rejected by all the people taking apprentices. The one exception is Halt, a Ranger.

And after Will inadvertently passes a test (climbing up a sheer wall into the Baron's study), Halt accepts him as an apprentice. At first, Will's new life seems to be all chores and unglamorous lessons, but he starts to realize the importance of the Ranger's skills. And at the same time, his fellow orphan Horace is being tormented at Battleschool by a gang of bullies.

Unfortunately, the kingdom is in new trouble -- the evil baron Morgarath is starting to send his monstrous Wurgals out once more, and there are even rumors that the ghastly Kalkara are also abroad. When it seems that the king himself may be Morgarath's target, Will and Halt are sent on a mission to stop the Kalkara -- except that the target isn't who they expect.

The world John Flanagan conjures up here is pretty recognizably a medieval England-that-never-was, with hints of similarly semi-familiar lands to explore (Gallica, Temujai). And he makes it more his own with elaborate fictional history, slightly too-Tolkienian flourishes (a villain named Morgarath?) and the first blossoming of a solid action/fantasy series.

The first half of "The Ruins of Gorlan" is a fairly slow experience, mostly made up of Will and Horace finding out what their new lives are all about. Lots of knife study, ponies, stew and tracking exercises, as well as a fairly nasty boar-hunt. And Flanagan liberally strews the story with plenty of historical backstory, and interesting details about medieval stuff (boar-spears, throwing knives, etc).

But about halfway through, the story suddenly becomes much darker, faster and bloodier. While the mild humour is still there ("Halt, Halt!"), Flanagan's tale becomes a deadly game of cat-and-mouse with a pair of assassin Sasquatches. And he definitely knows how to weave a sense of tension and foreboding around the clash between Kalkara and Rangers.

Will is also an excellent hero in the Lloyd Alexander mold -- he dreams of being a great knight, but doesn't seem to have much chance of it. And as he works with Halt, he gradually comes to realize that there are ways of serving that are just as important, though not as glorious. And Halt is a good foil for Will -- quirky, taciturn and incredibly tough and deadly.

"The Ruins of Gorlan" is an excellent start to a solid fantasy series, and serves as a pretty entertaining fantasy/adventure in its own right. An excellent story for all ages.

Action packed book ! in a fabulous series
By Melanie J. Dulaney
Castles, knights, awesome midieval weaponry, and super stealthy rangers--what 5th-7th grader could ask for more? Follow Halt, a senior king's ranger as he recruits and trains young Will in the ways of an elite team of specially trained defenders of the kingdom. Strong characters, both good and evil, are developed in Flanagan's Ranger's Apprentice series. Readers who struggle with lengthy books will need help with this one, but any adult who reads along with their child will also be sucked into the world of the King's Rangers!

The Star as Icon: Celebrity in the Age of Mass Consumption, by Daniel Herwitz

Princess Diana, Jackie O, Grace Kelly―the star icon is the most talked about yet least understood persona. The object of adoration, fantasy, and cult obsession, the star icon is a celebrity, yet she is also something more: a dazzling figure at the center of a media pantomime that is at once voyeuristic and zealously guarded. With skill and humor, Daniel Herwitz pokes at the gears of the celebrity-making machine, recruiting a philosopher's interest in the media, an eye for society, and a love of popular culture to divine our yearning for these iconic figures and the role they play in our lives.

Herwitz portrays the star icon as caught between transcendence and trauma. An effervescent being living on a distant, exalted planet, the star icon is also a melodramatic heroine desperate to escape her life and the ever-watchful eye of the media. The public buoys her up and then eagerly watches her fall, her collapse providing a satisfying conclusion to a story sensationally told―while leaving the public yearning for a rebirth.

Herwitz locates this double life in the opposing tensions of film, television, religion, and consumer culture, offering fresh perspectives on these subjects while ingeniously mapping society's creation (and destruction) of these special aesthetic stars. Herwitz has a soft spot for popular culture yet remains deeply skeptical of public illusion. He worries that the media distances us from even minimal insight into those who are transfigured into star icons. It also blinds us to the shaping of our political present.

Review

Essential for those with a keen interest in the sociology of popular culture and stardom.

(Library Journal)

A dazzling book... that manages to pack an astonishing amount of detail and depth into a modest number of pages... Highly recommended.

(Choice)

The Star as Icon can be compared with Stanley Cavell's Pursuits of Happiness, but is more contemporary and less optimistic. The book studies significant movies ( Rear Window, The Philadelphia Story), is culturally literate, and is very good on the idea of aura and popular culture as it has evolved since Walter Benjamin. Required reading for any course in film studies.

(Arthur Danto, Columbia University)

An eloquent essay that contributes to the contemporary discourse on celebrity and stardom.

(Leung Wing-Fai Film-Philosophy)

The Star as Icon displays an uncommonly high level of erudition and a masterful understanding of art history and philosophy rarely encountered in contemporary studies of mass culture. Daniel Herwitz's book is likely to provoke vigorous debate and few people will be able to read it without finding themselves challenged to articulate their own beliefs and commitments. It reconfigures the axis along which relations among high and low culture may be apprehended, yet does so without recourse to identity politics or a master narrative of globalization.

(Edward Dimendberg, author of Film Noir and the Spaces of Modernity)

In this highly original and provocative book, Daniel Herwitz argues that the star icon is not just an emblem of our celebrity culture. Rather the star is a creature 'caught between transcendence and trauma in her own life and in the public's gaze.' As aesthetic type, the star is at once created and destroyed by the society in which she operates. Both a philosophical meditation and an incisive cultural critique, this study of consumer culture's power to establish aura, only to reduce it quickly to a marketing formula, will make you laugh out loud—but perhaps also weep!

(Marjorie Perloff, professor emerita of English and comparative literature, Stanford University)
