Tantraloka means light on Tantra - the magnum opus of Abhinavagupta (950-1050 A.D.). The ultimate object of knowledge is Siva who is of the nature of luminosity and the individual known as jiva is essentially Siva. Consciousness is autonomous in its nature. Luminosity is the basic feature of consciousness. There is the possibility of becoming one with Siva by moving from the earth to Sadasiva by way of assimilation, samavesa. The second Chapter is concerned with deliberation on the way to Siva-hood via the pathless path. Its pathlessness lies in only the initial step suggested by the teacher with the rest of it to follow automatically. It is the kriya yoga which does not require any path to traverse along and is the path of pure consciousness where any action serves as the means of knowledge. The third Chapter deals with Sambhavopaya. The objects get reflected clearly in a clean mirror so does the world becomes reflected in the consciousness provided it has become one with Siva. The force of consciousness is considered as inseparably connected with Siva. The relationship of inseparability between Siva and Sakti produces delight which is the cause of appearance of the world.

A high quality English translation

The translators of this book have done an excellent job in the production of this English translation of the Tantraloka. I found the quality of the language in the book to be of a very high standard. The translators/authors provided a very eloquent introduction that places the Tantraloka within the wider context of the collective wisdom of mankind. In particular, the introduction points out that the school to which Abhinavagupta belonged shares its lineage with the school to which Yogananda (the author of Autobiography of a Yogi) belonged. The introduction also points out the similarities between Sri Aurobindo and Abhinavagupta’s conception of the Absolute. I learnt a lot from reading this book, and I found the work to be a comprehensive presentation of Kashmir Shaivism. I would classify this work as more of a religious text than as a text on spiritual philosophy. The truth of reality has been expressed in the world’s various spiritual traditions. This same truth has also been expressed within the Tantraloka. I am rating the book as five stars because the language of the translation is of a high standard and also because the work provides a comprehensive perspective of Kashmir Shaivism’s Tantra.

About the Author

Joseph Delaney is president and general manager of the construction management services group at Delaney CMS in Union Springs, New York. He is the former president of C&S Design Build Inc., C&S’s program and construction management company, where he started the agency construction management business, and in his 12-year career there, developed it into the fastest-growing and most profitable of the firms’ business units. At C&S, Joe was responsible for more than $1 billion in completed projects in the education, municipal, wastewater, airport, and private development sectors. In his 25 years as a construction professional, Joe has served in many roles including those of project engineer, design coordinator, superintendent, construction manager, program manager, general manager, and president. Joe is a licensed professional engineer, holds the Program Management Professional (PgMP�) credential, is a Certified Construction Manager (CCM�), and is a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED�) accredited professional. Joe is the only person in the world with all of these credentials.

In addition, he is an expert critical path method scheduler and has presented both nationally and internationally on construction program management. Joe received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from the State University of New York at Buffalo. So there I was hiking through the Galapagos Island's on my Honeymoon and all I could think about was where can I find a place to sit down and continue reading 'Far Horizons'.
I'm actually serious..
Like many of those born in the Y Generation, I have a rather short attention span and reading a book that's over 500 pages seems like the impossible but I must admit, I was sad when I turned to the last page, I wanted more.

I've read every motorcycle travel book i could get my hands on and I must say, this is the best one i've read yet!!
The writing style has an amazing flow to it and it has great storytelling. Its a great read and I want more!

Clear and Concise

I teach an Introduction to Music Scholarship class for undergrads at my college and have used this book for four years. It is clear, conscise, and written in an engaging and frank style. I use the book because it enables me to structure an entire semester around it, and my students enjoy the book- which is amazing in a research methods class. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in music and writing well, no matter what level of expertise they are.

Great drumset book for young drummers!

My wife teaches drumset to all ages and loves this book for young students. It has cool pictures that students like and touches the basics of rock, jazz, and blues. It also has sample drum fills the students can play. A CD is also included. Her only complaint is that it might move a little too fast for very young students due to the fact that it only spends one lesson on quarter note beats and then jumps into eighth notes. Highly recommended.

Jack Cristil (1925–2014) was a Southeastern Conference icon and the Voice of Bulldog athletics for more than five decades. In this biography, Cristil’s remarkable life and career is shared with all Bulldog fans. Authored by Mississippi journalist Sid Salter with a foreword by distinguished Mississippi State University alum John Grisham, the book originally sold over 10,000 copies and raised over $170,000 for the Jacob S. “Jack” Cristil Scholarship in Journalism at MSU.

With a fifty-eight-year association with MSU, Cristil was the second-longest tenured college radio play-by-play announcer in the nation at the time of his 2011 retirement. During his legendary career as the Voice of the Bulldogs, Cristil called 636 football games since 1953. That’s roughly 60 percent of all the football games played in school history. He was in his 54th season as the men’s basketball play-by-play voice, having described the action of almost 55 percent of all the men’s basketball games. In all, Cristil shared with Bulldog fans across the Magnolia State and around the world more than 1,500 collegiate contests. Central to Cristil’s inspiring story was his upbringing in Memphis as the son of first-generation Russian-Jewish immigrants. This paperback edition is updated with new material covering Cristil’s death and memorial service, with additional post-retirement and memorial photos.

Great book that would be a great gift for those who love Mississippi State, stories about how things were in much simpler times, and/or those interested in how hard work and love of the craft can bring rewards measured in respect and love by one's audience rather than money.

RIP Jack, you are missed by many.
