For working machinists, toolmakers, and designers

This practical little book contains about 90% of the information that you'll ever really need without going to Machinery's Handbook. It is also about a tenth of the price, is much less bulky, and is durable and easy to flip through with the spiral binding.
These are the specific sections included: I. Mathematical Information (decimal equivalents, areas, gage blocks, shop trig.), II. Drills (grinding, common problems and causes, drill sizes- decimal and metric, cutting speeds) III. Tapers, IV. Screws, Threads, Fasteners V. Milling, Shaping, Turning (cutters, speeds and feeds, lubricants), VI. Gears, VII. Weights, Gages, Tolerances, VIII.Tool Steels, IX Metric Information, X Reading Shop Prints (symbols, dimensioning and tolerances, geometric tolerancing, surface texture specs.)
There is a good index in the back of the book and the table of contents in the front is also detailed. There are black side indexes to help you flip quickly to the ten main sections. The spiral binding is durable and the paper quality is heavy.
Between school, the shop floor, and engineering offices I've been working around machinery for about thirty years now- this really is a practical, usuable book for a reasonable amount of money. Fits in your pocket- and if it disappears you won't be out a fortune.

Great resource!

I am using this grade level and the K-2 book together with a small group of 3rd grade boys and girls with behavior needs who also needed some guidance away from egotism and onto optimism. Coupled with yoga and additional whole-class activities, we are making progress. We start and end each meeting with a triangle chime that the kids use to focus. When the echo of the chime is done, we begin or end; which is a great centering activity itself. They have enjoyed the hands-on experiments, art activities, and learning how the brain contributes to our ability to pay attention to detail, drown out the distractions, and appreciate the little things. This curriculum is easy to use, most days I can prep it just 5-10min before the lesson is held. Some lessons require household supplies, but are easy to acquire and can be creatively substituted. 4 stars becuase some of the content was a little "heavy" or too difficult for the 3rd graders, so I used ideas/references in the K-2 book. Easy enough to do this, when you have both books. Could prob use the K-2 book alone for 3rd graders and beef up the ideas or go a little deeper with the theme.

Teaching meditation concepts

Gives great suggestions about how to introduce meditation concepts in an easy to follow, creative manner. I especially loved the "brain bottle" containing sand, glitter and water to show what an "agitated brain" looks like and how meditation teaches it to calm down. I use it with my adult clients as well when I expalin how the amygdala creates chaos in our brains when we're upset.

The Book I have been searching for!

I was looking for something that would tie my classroom management strategy neatly into a single package but have not found that magic missing piece. My school district uses several different programs (Capturing Kids Hearts, Kids at Hope, and some of the schools use Make You Day). I like to share with my students WHY it is important to Choose Kind (from the book Wonder (our first read aloud of the year). I have tried incorporating things from Whole Brain Teaching and even Kagan Strategies but it all seemed so disjointed.

Until now!!! This book teaches the students about the brain and how different parts of the brain respond to different things. It teaches students how they respond to stress and why. It teaches them to recognize which part of their brain is in control and then asks them if that is truly the part that should be in charge OR if there is a better decision that they should be making.

As if that is not enough, the author took the time to tie each of the lessons to CCSS standards so teachers can justify the use of it in the classroom. There are additional books (literature) you can use as read alouds to help make each topic come to life. Each unit is meant to last 2 weeks and the book is designed to be taught over the course of the year. I love how it ties in the sense and some great science lessons.

This is excellent for your ADHD, Shy, and students with anger issues. I cannot wait to begin to use it this upcoming school year.

About the Author
Tom Brown, Jr. began to learn hunting and tracking at the age of eight under the tutelage of an Apache elder, medicine man, and scout in Toms River, New Jersey, and is the author of 16 books on nature. Recently, he was the technical advisor on The Hunted, a major motion picture starring Tommy Lee Jones and Benecio Del Toro. In 1978, Tom founded the Tracker School in the New Jersey Pine Barrens where he offers more than 25 classes about wilderness survival and environmental protection.

NOT A FIELD GUIDE!!!

This is not something you take with you in the woods to help identify wild edibles. No color pics , all black and white HAND DRAWINGS. Not really what I was looking for at all. It is a good book if you want to get in touch with yourself in the middle of nowhere. I was looking for a field guide to wild plants - not a novel about how dude grew up. Practically worthless for me.

I wasn't expecting a novel like book without any pictures of the plants. Totally inspired me to create my own book with pictures, descriptions, areas the plants are found, dangers and benefits including plants that interact with medications. This has a lot of great information and is a good start however my kids were completely uninterested which was disappointing. Not what I was hoping for.

I live in the Southwest (AZ) and most of these plants seem to grow in the Northeast. I haven't finished reading this book yet, so I hope there will be plants from my region. I grew up with parents using herbs (desert plants) to aid in our health, so I am familiar on usage of some native plants. Most herbal books don't provide clear enough detail on how to confirm plant or use of plant. I wanted to widen my knowledge as I believe in their worth, since I grew up using them.

About the Author
Glenn Drowns, author of Showing Poultry and Storey’s Guide to Raising Poultry, 4th Edition, and his wife conserve and promote rare breeds and varieties of turkeys, ducks, geese, and chickens at their Sand Hill Preservation Center in Calamus, Iowa. Drowns, a highly respected poultry judge, has raised standard turkey varieties since 1989, and he received the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy’s Breed Conservation Award in 1999 for his contributions to the identification and survival of rare turkeys.

Great addition to any poultry keepers library

This book has great information about raising all kinds of poultry. Its unique advantage over other books is that it covers the less common (i.e. non-chicken) types of poultry, especially gamebirds. The author does a great job of explaining what things are similar between different types of birds, and what things are different. If you are considering raising other birds, read this book first- it will help you get off to a great start.
The information in the book tends to cover the more basic, common scenarios for chickens rather than being packed full of tons of less common details and facts. No doubt, this is in order to cover all of the topics related to other birds while still keeping the book a manageable length. It is a great resource for all chicken keepers. It will answer most of your questions, but won't answer all of them (however, I rather doubt that any single book will). Some topics it covers particularly well- housing, bird biology, what to expect from your birds month-by-month (great for the beginner!), and appendices devoted to feed and incubation information. I was surprised at the relative lack of information about raising birds on pasture- while this topic is covered, it is not covered at the level of detail as some other topics, but there are other books specifically devoted to pastured poultry. The book also covers some more unique topics- a chapter each on breeding, incubating, showing, and poultry as pets.

For backyard poultry keeping: this book is a must have! I am getting guinea fowl and Gardening With Guineas was much too basic and written in a childlike fashion. Storey's book is full of info and written in a clear concise way.

Excellent info about many different types of poultry

I bought this book for my daughter, who shows chickens. At her level of competition, the showman must master a wide variety of knowledge about all different species of poultry. The information in this volume keeps her very competitive! It is an all inclusive, thorough book with lots of information and covering many different kinds of birds. We still refer to it often!
