There's not much to add to the review by Mr Reynolds

I thoroughly endorse the review by Mr Reynolds except that (1) I don't share his expectation of ribbons because I use holy cards which I have always found more useful than ribbons (2) I don't feel the absence of readings is a problem because I like the one volume format. I should also note that there is a two-volume set of readings following the BCP lectionary. I still prefer a Bible because I like following different translations. (Although it's not rubrical, during the interminable weeks after Pentecost, I also vary the source of the Psalms.)

A Monastic Breviary: Holy Cross & St Helena Anglican Religious Orders

This now out-of-print edition of the Monastic Breviary used by the Anglican Religious Orders of the Holy Cross (men) and St. Helena (women). "A Monastic Breviary, published in 1976, presents the Daily Office according to the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer. It organizes the Psalter in a two week cycle, distributing them in four offices (Matins, Diurnum, Vespers and Compline). Proper and common antiphons and hymns are provided for the liturgical seasons and observances of the Church. Sunday antiphons are taken from the BCP Eucharistic lectionary, and the Daily Office lectionary readings are noted in a special section. Propers and commons are provided for the saints and other days observed in the Holy Cross liturgical tradition, as well as lessons for use when traveling. A Monastic Breviary enables the complete observance of daily monastic prayer in the Anglican Benedictine tradition. (469 pages, hardcover)." Somewhat cumbersome to use given the lack of ribbons (why anyone would even think of publishing a prayerbook without ribbons is beyond me)it nevertheless offers a great Daily Office for those in the High Church/Anglo-Catholic tradition of the Episcopal Church who are not prepared for the Inclusive Language used by St. Helena's Personal Breviary, which is in some ways even harder to use if one wishes to use a Two Week Cycle for reading the Psalms. This Rare edition is sadly out-of-print and hard to find but remains one of the best Daily Prayer books out there. (Note: One of the weaknesses of this book compared to other Breviaries is that it does not include Scripture Readings: there is the expectation that you will use your own Bible)

A must-read for both Technical & Training Dept. personnel. Any manager or supervisor who begrudges the cost/time required to develop & train on procedures would benefit by reading this book. This book clearly delineates the difference between technical writing & proper procedure development. The Index in the Kindle edition should have had hyperlinks and not be a mere list of terms.

About the Author
Jose Antonio, Ph.D. is the CEO and co-founder of the International Society of Sports Nutrition (www.issn.net) and is a Fellow of the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He was the 2005 recipient of the NSCA Research Achievement Award and the 2009 NSCA Educator of the Year; moreover, he has published more books and scientific publications than you will ever care to read. Dr. Antonio completed a Ph.D. and post-doctoral research fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas Texas. He is an Associate Professor at Nova Southeastern University in Exercise and Sports Science in Ft Lauderdale FL. In his spare time, he trains and competes in SUP (stand up paddling) races throughout the state of Florida. If he weren’t a scientist, he’d probably be a beach bum.

A hard read.

I bought this book to try to learn some basic principles about designing my own exhaust system. As an RF engineer, the principles were very similar and I did get some good information out of this book. A lot of research went into this and unfortunately there is little solid information on the topic, otherwise. Conjecture on the other hand is easy to find.

The problem is, this book is horribly outdated and presumably early 1900's English is hard to follow (the first book was published in 1962). I think most people would give the book 2 stars.

When the data was being taken, there were no catalytic converters, no multi-valve cylinder heads, no variable valve timing, no oxygen sensors, etc. Each of these things has an effect on how a modern exhaust system should be designed.

There also seems to be some contradictions. The reflections of the wave in the exhaust are caused by every perturbation, especially openings, like where two pipes join or a pipe expands into a muffler. The strongest effect comes from the very first opening, which is where the primary pipes join. This means that primary length is the single most important part of the exhaust system tuning. Yet they provide an equation that has nothing to do with the speed of the engine or how many cylinders are employed and later, they flat out state, that the primaries should be made 18" on a four cylinder engine and then the same for a six cylinder engine, without even using their calculation.

Bottom line: If you try to design your own exhaust system using only this book, you will have a very hard time of it and will likely achieve very little improvement in performance over just running it any way that fits. On the other hand, if you try to design your own exhaust system without reading this book, you will have no chance at all of improving exhaust performance. It's your choice, but beware, it is a very hard read.

was an amazing addition to this book

How can a story know my feelings, seem to speak for me, have my thoughts and not be my story? That is the power of Jill's writing. How can
these people have such a different life from mine and yet I'm able to relate to them? Especially Frankie. To be able to finally protect herself,
but then be so giving to a child thrown into her world, I really wanted to know her. Having the layers of a "selfish" sister, and a "cold" mother,
peeled away and see how they "protected" themselves, was an amazing addition to this book. To see all sides, whether I agreed with their
choices or not, was a unique experience. It helped me to remember that everyone has layers and how they come to be is something I
want to remember when I come in contact with people. I would love to know how Frankie fares at being a mother, herself.
Thankyou to author, Jill Kelly, for such a well written story. To meet this family was well worth the tears I spent at times getting to know
each ones journey.

I loved the character development

I find myself hoping that Jill Kelly will write a sequel to When Your Mother Doesn't. I loved the character development, the way I found different feelings for each character as my judgments turned into understanding, respect and curiosity about what made these women tick. I enjoyed the quirky turns and surprises that keep the storytelling fresh and the reader turning pages. A great read and hard to put down.

Engaging plot and interesting characters

I deeply enjoyed reading this novel. I immediately connected with Frankie's story -- that of the responsible elder sister who dealt with the emotional and physical absence of her mother. I thought that I would go on through the book continuing to dislike the other characters as originally seen through Frankie's point of view. But I was then surprised by the development of the other main characters, Callie and Lola. Their personalities developed in ways I could not have anticipated, and I became even more deeply engrossed in their stories. Kelly has a gift for creating characters that are fully alive, and I felt as if I was getting to know each of them intimately. I really enjoy Kelly's prose style, too. Her writing gets you into the skin of the characters with ease. The plot is engaging and moves forward at a steady clip, so it continually held my interest. As one other reviewer noted, I often found myself reading late into the night, unable to put it down. I highly recommend it.

Let me start this review with a quote from the introduction: "I am not a Buddhist. I have not joined any Buddhist orders, adopted any religious beliefs, nor taken any formal vows. I say this now because I do not want anyone to think I am writing under false pretenses. Nothing I say here should be taken as the words of a Zen Buddhist...This book is an exploration of ten of my favourite questions and where they took me...This book describes my own attempt to combine science and personal practice in the investigation of consciousness." As someone with a passing interest in philosophy, Buddhism, and the study of consciousness, I found the book quite interesting. My only real complaint is that perhaps Ms. Blackmore could have included a bit more "science." To be fair though, there is brief mention of familiar folks like Antonio Damasio [Self Comes to Mind: Constructing the Conscious Brain], Daniel Dennett, Benjamin Libet, Christof Koch, Alva Noe, and Richard Wiseman [59 Seconds: Change Your Life in Under a Minute (Vintage)], to name of few. On the plus side, I found myself agreeing completely with her general opinions, which she derives by the end of the book, on what consciousness is: "There is nothing it is like to be me. I am not a persisting conscious entity. I do not consciously cause the actions of my body. Consciousness is not a stream of experiences. Seeing entails no vivid mental pictures or movie in the brain. There is no unity of consciousness either in a given moment or through time. Brain activity is neither conscious nor unconscious. There are no contents of consciousness. There is no now."

The ten questions that Ms. Blackmore asks are: 1) Am I Conscious Now? 2) What Was I Conscious Of A Moment Ago? 3) Who Is Asking the Question? 4) Where Is This? 5) How Does Thought Arise? 6) There Is No Time. What is Memory? 7) When Are You? 8) Are You Here Now? 9) What Am I Doing? 10) What Happens Next?

In sum, this book makes a great prelude to her newer book, Consciousness (A Brief Insight), and for an introduction to the study of consciousness, this pair can't be beat. Lastly, I would say that everything neuroscience is telling us now-a-days, [for example: Why Everyone (Else) Is a Hypocrite: Evolution and the Modular Mind, Incognito: The Secret Lives of the Brain, or The Tell-Tale Brain: A Neuroscientist's Quest for What Makes Us Human] was presaged in many Buddhist writings, which makes this particular line of attack on consciousness studies very unique indeed. For decades now, British psychologist Susan Blackmore has been writing about consciousness, about Zen Buddhism and numerous other subjects. As a young person she'd taken an interest in parapsychology but was put off when one of the researchers for whom she worked asked her to fudge the results [1]. She came around to being a skeptic of claims for paranormal experiences, although in her years of investigating people making such remarkable statements she became convinced that almost all of the people who make them weren't deliberate frauds, rather, that they believed that what was happening in their lives was genuine; but she has yet to be convinced of any such claims. Over the years her work has focused on things like consciousness studies, memes and tremes; and it is a running comment throughout her work that she practices Zen meditation. Better than a decade ago Oxford University Press published her Conversations on Consciousness, which was a delightful romp of visits with the leading-edge researchers in consciousness studies. Daniel Dennett, Sir Francis Crick, Patricia and Paul Churchland, Christof Koch among numerous others sat with her and her recorder and discussed with what is still a hot topic in science.

Zen and the Art of Consciousness was originally published by Oneworld in 2009 as a hardcover with the title Ten Zen Questions; her publisher suggested the change of title when it came time to re-release it in paperback, to which she agreed. This is a highly personal and unique account of her pursuit of Zen meditation practice under the guidance of British Zen Master John Crook. She details her visits to Crook's meditation center in Maenllwyd, Wales, a rustic farm where Crook leads retreats for his students and practitioners. I should point out that while she practices Zen meditation, Susan Blackmore is not a Buddhist, preferring not the taking of vows and all of the things which entail entering a sangha, or Buddhist community.

She began going to retreats at Maenllwyd in the early 1980s and each visit was a protracted consideration of a number of koans and koan-like statements given to her and the other participants by Crook. When are you? What were you conscious of a moment ago? There is no time. What is memory? Sitting on her mat day after day, Blackmore turned the 'challenge' of each koan over and over in her mind, in an intellectually curious way that most everyone might, but with the certain knowledge that if the koan were to "do" anything, it would not come about through discursive thought. Eventually her "analytic self" grew quiet and, in her words, each koan began working on her. She came away with numerous insights about the Self, that anxious, nervous worry-wart which we all have within - one of the aims of Zen - but more importantly from her viewpoint, she was gradually in a better place to understand just how far astray 'consciousness studies' have gone. To detail some of her conclusions would constitute a spoiler; let me grin and just say that her ideas are most congenial with those of Daniel Dennett.

Z to A of who we are?

Consciousness – the knowledge of what we know and how we know is probably the last frontier in the science of the human body. There are two ways of contemplating consciousness. The basic problem is inherent in the idea of the mind studying itself. Yet we cannot rely on other minds studying our own because other minds cannot be conscious of our own. It is a conundrum that Susan Blackmore, a psychologist, is trying to solve by infusing Zen into psychology, neurology, and philosophy.

She stood by her declaration that no religion is involved in her thesis. The Zen she discusses is a method of achieving tranquillity of thought and a sense of neutrality in our subjective study of our own minds. This is not a book about Buddhism and Blackmore disavows Buddhist rituals and doctrines such as reincarnation, and concentrates only in the art of Zen. It is the art of understanding and preparing the mind to think about itself.

This book is not only about Zen, it also provides a clear account of what science and philosophy presently knows about the mind. It is an exploration of who “I’ might be.
