A Revealing and Intimate Story of What a Mother Willand Will NotDo for Her Daughters
What kind of women do daughters become when their fathers are missing and their mothers can’t love them? How do they find love and ways to love themselves?
Nearly three decades of secrets lie between Lola Ashby and the two girls she reluctantly raised. Now, prompted by the one father figure she respects, older daughter Frankie agrees to drive from Portland to visit her ailing mother, who abandoned the girls when they were in high school. When younger daughter Callie announces to Frankie that she’s moving her fashion model career to Los Angeles from the East Coast, Frankie badgers her sister into meeting up in the Idaho panhandle for a family reunion to dilute the impact of their mother’s indifference.
However, on Frankie’s first night on the road, the trip gets more complicated when a well-dressed elderly woman at a rest stop dumps a young boy in her lap with a request to take him on to Montana. And Callie’s exit from Pittsburgh is fraught with its own shady and violent difficulties. Meanwhile, Lola strengthens her resolve to keep the past and its secrets where they belong.

Review
"Deeply moving and profoundly suspenseful, When Your Mother Doesn’t is the unforgettable story of two sisters navigating their way through loss and grief in search of love, and what it means to be a family. A very fine novel from an engaging voice." Carla Buckley, author of The Deepest Secret
"I devoured When Your Mother Doesn't in greedy gulps, fully steeped in this gripping story of three broken women who understand each other so little, yet are bonded by so much. Beautifully written and unflinching, this book is a gem." Kristina Riggle, author of Real Life & Liars
"A heart wrenching and poignant story about mothers and daughters and the secrets they keep. With a plot that twists and turns, Kelly masterfully weaves a compelling narrative which explores how abandonment and sacrifice play out against a backdrop of adversity. Told through multiple perspectives, the novel addresses the complex ways in which women are forced to protect themselves and their daughters. An interesting and provocative read that will have you guessing until the very end." Tamar Ossowski, author of Left

was an amazing addition to this book
By Tawana Arroyo
How can a story know my feelings, seem to speak for me, have my thoughts and not be my story? That is the power of Jill's writing. How can
these people have such a different life from mine and yet I'm able to relate to them? Especially Frankie. To be able to finally protect herself,
but then be so giving to a child thrown into her world, I really wanted to know her. Having the layers of a "selfish" sister, and a "cold" mother,
peeled away and see how they "protected" themselves, was an amazing addition to this book. To see all sides, whether I agreed with their
choices or not, was a unique experience. It helped me to remember that everyone has layers and how they come to be is something I
want to remember when I come in contact with people. I would love to know how Frankie fares at being a mother, herself.
Thankyou to author, Jill Kelly, for such a well written story. To meet this family was well worth the tears I spent at times getting to know
each ones journey.

I loved the character development
By Amazon Customer
I find myself hoping that Jill Kelly will write a sequel to When Your Mother Doesn't. I loved the character development, the way I found different feelings for each character as my judgments turned into understanding, respect and curiosity about what made these women tick. I enjoyed the quirky turns and surprises that keep the storytelling fresh and the reader turning pages. A great read and hard to put down.

Engaging plot and interesting characters
By Dena DeCastro
I deeply enjoyed reading this novel. I immediately connected with Frankie's story -- that of the responsible elder sister who dealt with the emotional and physical absence of her mother. I thought that I would go on through the book continuing to dislike the other characters as originally seen through Frankie's point of view. But I was then surprised by the development of the other main characters, Callie and Lola. Their personalities developed in ways I could not have anticipated, and I became even more deeply engrossed in their stories. Kelly has a gift for creating characters that are fully alive, and I felt as if I was getting to know each of them intimately. I really enjoy Kelly's prose style, too. Her writing gets you into the skin of the characters with ease. The plot is engaging and moves forward at a steady clip, so it continually held my interest. As one other reviewer noted, I often found myself reading late into the night, unable to put it down. I highly recommend it.
