Nothing prepares them for arrest in Jerusalem, their startling discoveries in Bethlehem, or unexpected danger after their return home. Melchior fights for his life, while his niece struggles against bias. King Balthazar dreams of regaining his lost kingdom. And the youngest magus, Caspar, is drawn deeper and deeper into unexpected mystery.

From the Back Cover
"Johannes Bergmann'sThe Test of the Magi is a great exemplar of what careful research can yield when applied to familiar scriptural passages. In this case it is the journey of mysterious men from the East, alerted by a new star in the skies, to pay homage to the infant Christ. Told from the point of view of Caspar, student of the eminent Persian astronomer Melchior, this dramatic exegesis of the Epiphany story grips the reader from start to finish."--LONIE CALDECOTT, co-editor ofSecond Springand director of theCentre for Faith & Culture

"A beautifully evocative rendering of the legend of The Three Wise Men, with haunting echoes of T.S. Eliot's famous poem on their epochal journey adding to its rich store of wonder."--MARK SEBANC, co-author of the "Legacy of the Stone Harp" series

"Starting with just a few threads of ancient scriptures, Johannes Bergmann weaves an intricate tapestry of religion, discovery, and adventure. Armed with his vast knowledge and sweeping vision of the history of the eastern Roman Empire, the author reveals the Three Wise Men in the context of their turbulent times. The reader joinsthe caravan of characters inThe Test of the Magiand arrives at the end ofthis journey rewarded beyond measure."--LINDA MCCULLOUGH MOORE, author of The Distance Between and This Road Will Take Us Closer to the Moon

"Johannes Bergmann re-imagines the delightful story of the Magi that makes up a key part of St. Matthew's 'infancy narrative' in a way that could be told only by a man who has lived immersed in the great cultures of the West, the Middle East, and Africa. Anyone who is on a spiritual journey is taking the Magi's test, and should read this stunning story which spans vast distances of territory, mind, and spirit."--JOHN WILLSON, Senior Contributor atThe Imaginative Conservative; professor of history emeritus, Hillsdale College

An evocative, almost mythological telling of the Journey of the Magi.
By dragonlady
I am a longtime fan of the works of Johannes Bergmann (who may also write literature, satire and political philosophy under other names). He has an astonishing ability to be both elegiac and informative, to elucidate complexities one may not have considered in the tale of the Magi, and to at once raise the subject far above the usual passing notice that the Magi get, in the manner of an ancient tale, while simultaneously keeping his story clear and down to earth, so that a smart child might enjoy this book as much as a smart adult. Bergmann uses language and literary tropes that evoke a master tale of the sort found in the 1001 Persian Nights, or a Greek myth, or a bible story. The book is touching, beautifully written and would make a perfect Christmas gift for young friends and relatives. I will be handing it out to favored children and young people, because it is so beautifully, thoughtfully done that it may inspire young minds to real thought.

A work of wise and blissful genius, combining theological scholarship, philosophical and spiritual reflection, anthropological investigation, and historical and cultural reconstruction.
Quite possibly Professor Johannes Bergmann, during his travels in the East, has in fact stumbled upon a lost book of the bible -- the Gospel of the Nativity -- which he has edited and translated from ancient crumbling texts. A classic for Christmas, and for any other time of the year.

This book is an instant classic. This guy Bergmann may be our generation's C.S. Lewis, but with a style and sense of humor that will appeal to the 20 to 30 crowd.
And a great book for the entire family which can be read to kids just as my parents read Lewis to me.
I hope and pray for a sequel and I look forward to other novels by the creative and mirth- filled defender of the permanent things.
