very enjoyable

I saw a lot of reviews screaming about how unoriginal this was...earth to readers....lol....JAK is NOT original. She is formula, but it is a formula we so enjoy. All her males are deceptive mild on outside, very controled inside; they are Alpha Males underneath and don't you think otherwise. They are green, grey or amber eyed. She is not that pretty, but very vivacious, a forceful personality and is used to getting her own way. Generally, she has been hurt, maybe he has been hurt or both, and one side of their family - close kissing cousins of the Adams Family - will drive them nuts. Every book has their share of quirky characters, and lots of rapier repartee, mostly centre around a mystery that forces the leads together.
There!! I just reviewed EVERY JAK book every written...however, have you ever looked at Nora Roberts?? You are talking formula again. Lets face it - out side of Maggie Davis with her Out of the Blue and Last Male Virgin - most stories have already been written dozens of times. It is what the writer DOES with the story. JAK does very well. Just we sort of know her too well so the razzle-dazzle is a bit expected, so we are let down. When someone yells BOO! you jump the first time. 5th time it's the same fightful BOO!, but you go yeah yeah...
I really enjoyed Flash. Not as much as Wildest Hearts, Deep Waters or Absolutely, Positively, but I really enjoyed it.
Olivia Chantry is a messy bessy in the desk department, but she is a one woman dynamo in her business Light Fantastic. The Chantry family (the pains in the bums this go around) expected her to inherit and run her uncle's business Glow, Inc. when he dies. Instead, he was in money troubles and sold the 51% of the stock to Jasper Sloan. Naturally, they are at loggerheads about how to run the business, with Olivia not likely she is 49% owner, but they have little time to iron this out, before a blackmailer strikes. They are forced to reveal all to each other and work together to stop the blackmailer.
Formula, formula, formula...JAK trademark all the way...but this dog and and pony show is one well polished rendition....

Lacklustre

Jayne Ann Krentz seems definitely on the path of Mainsteam Women Fiction. The romance in her latest is very very ultra-lite. I have no idea what the main characters look like at all!
The wit, the humour, and the suspense are there, but everything seems so fimiliar after a while. And the suspense isn't even strong to begin with, hence my interest begins to wane after a while.
And for $7.99, this book isn't worth the price.

are they kidding?

why would I pay almost $18 for a kindle version of a JAK book from the 1990's? Her latest release only costs $11! It is a good read and I would give the story 4 stars, but the ebook price is rediculous.
Pick this one up in paperback for half to one third the price if you can't get it from a used book store.

Incomplete at best

This is absolute junk! The "complete homeschool bundle" doesn't come with the books and poems necessary to teach each lesson. The whole set is written for a classroom setting and then they removed the books and called it "homeschool ready" when really you are left less prepared to teach. Truly you would be better off buying those cheap Hooked On books you can buy at Walmart and Sam's club.

Great resource!

Words their way is a great resource to help students understand word families, see connections between words, and start to internalize how words are created and what sounds letters make. I wouldn't use this as a curriculum by itself, but it is a great supplemental resource for any spelling/vocabulary/phonics work in the classroom or at home.

Sherman A. Jackson is the King Faisal Chair of Islamic Thought and Culture, Professor of Religion, Professor of American Studies and Ethnicity, University of Southern California. A great introduction to Sufism, especially for "non-Sufis"

This book is an important addition to literature on Islam for so many reasons. It offers a unique window into Islamic ethical thought; it presents some of the core teachings of Sufism in a way that is relevant, and not an immediate turn-off, for those who may not be inclined toward Sufism; it offers an expertly done English-language translation of a short, accessible classical text on spirituality and character-building in Islam; and the content of the translation itself is insightful, inspirational, and thought-provoking for both the Sufi adept as well as the casual observer.

In this book, Jackson gives us a translation of The Bride-Groom's Crown, a short manual on Islamic spirituality by the famous Sufi of the Shadhili tariqa, ibn `Ata Allah. He also has a critical introduction at the start of the book that is a must-read for those who have academic or intellectual interest in modern arguments about Sufism in particular or in contemporary Islam more generally.

As for the review written by "Basil," I do not agree at all with its conclusions. The reviewer seems to have made his conclusions based on a haphazard reading of only one section in Jackson's introduction, in which Jackson presents a summary of the major arguments made against Sufism. Nowhere does Jackson say that mysticism is separate from Sufism, nor does he say that there are two different kinds of Sufism (one being mystical, the other focused on character-building). Instead, in his section on "Between Mysticism and Personal Piety," Jackson discusses mysticism and character-building as two different aspects of Sufism as a whole. He specifies these two aspects as a way to point out that while some Muslims may be uncomfortable with the first (mysticism), they would not have a problem with the second (on the development of personal piety). Though some die-hard Sufis may take offense at Jackson mentioning this (as Basil seems to have), this point needs to be made. Jackson seems to be saying that while not everyone would feel comfortable with all that Sufism has to offer, there are critical aspects of it that everyone, and especially every Muslim, should be familiar with.

While Jackson is known for his works on Islamic law, theology, and "Blackamerican Islam," one need not question his academic expertise in Sufism. If there is any doubt as to his qualifications on this topic, the section on "Seminal Themes and Sensibilities" in his introduction makes it amply clear that he knows what he is talking about. Jackson's grasp of some of the most intricate subtleties of Sufi thought is apparent in this section. He brings out the major themes and insights of The Bride-groom's Crown in a way that helps prime the reader for a truly beneficial and well-grounded read through the translation. And if someone is not really interested in all of the contemporary debates on Sufism and mysticism, they can simply skip the Intro and read the translation itself. It is beautiful, and well-worth the read.

Well Translated

A proper representation of the original work aptly reworded into English. A lot of thought was put into the translation and representation of the text and can be clearly seen.
The intro seems to be heavily reliant on a few handful of sources though and might not be the best representation of the Sufi dynamic. Regardless, an enjoyable and at points, entertaining read.
The pricing is a bit steep, also.

Approachable source on Sufism

Prof. Jackson's latest translation (see his 2002 translation of a work by al-Ghazali) demonstrates his facility with creating readable translations from medieval Arabic, no small task. His introduction, which certainly did not set out to be exhaustive, allows English speakers with an interest in Islamic/Muslim spirituality to begin to think about how this work might fit into what they already know about Islam, perhaps particularly in the US. For practicing Muslims in the US who may have grown up hearing only Wahhabist perspectives on Sufism, this approach may allow them to see how many ideas from a thirteenth-century Egyptian thinker like Ibn 'Ata' Allah they find in their everyday understandings of Islam. The translation itself is fluid; one might easily read the whole of it in a few hours. The work is in the style of "popular" hadith collections ("40 Hadith") or works on etiquette, like that of al-Bukhari, which by giving the reader a tidbit to consider, force him or her to engage in a process of conscious consideration of what his or her relationship is with the Divine, and how he or she might want to change it. Some of them include basics like not "backbiting" (don't be snarky!) that generally make for a more productive society. Probably every Muslim who reads this for his or her spiritual growth will want to read some sections again and again, and in this sense having one's own copy is worth the (fairly expensive) price. Paragraph 280 (pp. 128-9) is one of my favorites, about not being so consumed with the fly bothering you that you forget the nearby lion.

The original work is available in a number of Arabic editions; Jackson has made no effort here to provide an exhaustive list or address codicologic or authorship questions, in all likelihood in order to avoid cluttering a text for non-specialists. This is not a criticism, as clearly it was the author's choice to avoid elaborate academic apparati.

Those interested in digging more deeply into scholarship on Sufism should take a close look through the footnotes of the introduction, which provide references to many excellent works by scholars who specialize in Sufism. Prof Knysh's overview of Sufism is similarly designed to help beginners situate themselves, and the citations to his work should not be construed as the limit of Jackson's knowledge on the topic.

Those interested in the early Shadiliya or interested Muslim spirituality will want to read this book.

Great starter book especially for accountants

The second edition of this book, just published, provides an easy to read introduction to both the standards and the methodology of valuing small and medium size companies. If you have an MBA in Finance from a top 20 B-school, Pratt would be a better read (although he must like reading encyclopedia), but Trugman address the professional concerns and requirements of the professional organizations (AICPA, NACVA, ASA, IBA) and provides hands-on applications and sample reports. I use this as a text book in a course in BV at the graduate level. It does not address large, publicly held corporate valuations, but that is not the niche he desires to address

Well worth the money

I highly recommed this book. It has a lot of valuable information. One chapter gives websites to quickly locate economic, industry, financial, and business information. I have read other book on valuation that put me to sleep. This is not one of those books. If Mr. Trugman wrote the tax code, people would actually read it and find it interesting. He has an effective way of showing you how to apply the information to real life situations. If you want to understand business valuation from an expert, this is a must.

Understanding Business Valuation is a core valuation book for practitioners and students of BV.

Gary Trugman's Understanding Business Valuation is perhaps not only the very best starter book on the subject of valuing small and medium sized businesses, but it is also a standard reference work that seasoned valuation practitioners will find useful. Trugman also happens to be a superb teacher and presenter of valuation subjects, and this book features the same depth of research, insight, thoroughness, clarity, and good humor that characterize his approach to teaching. I have a substantial library of excellent valuation books that I regularly refer to, including books by Shannon Pratt, Alina Niculita, et al.; James Hitchner et al.; Robert F. Reilly and Robert P. Schweihs; Aswath Damodaran; Christopher Mercer; Tom Copeland et al.; Jay Abrams; Mark Zyla; Jay Fishman; Chris Mellen and Frank Evans; and Stephen Penman, among others). I think Trugman's book clearly qualifies as a core valuation reference text, and I unhesitatingly recommend it to anyone seeking to do what the title indicates: i.e., to understand business valuation.

As noted in a Michigan Court of Appeals case:

"The [trial] [c]ourt relies primarily upon the expert testimony of Gary Trugman as supplemented by [defendant's valuation expert] in [reaching its] conclusion. a wonderful, thoughtful read

From the first page I was blown away. My version of the book had a foreword which talked about Delaney the person and how he was so young when he wrote this. Those words continued to resonate with me as I read because regardless of the age of the author, he has a masterful control of the language.
The book is very much about language and how we use it and has undertones in that language can be used to control or as a weapon. This is true of all languages. Our protagonists come to discover the subtlety of words and it gave me pause and made me reflect upon all the times I didn't choose my words wisely. So many unintended consequences arise from poor word choice. Sometimes I think the Queen's English would be much cleaner and nicer if every word had only one meaning, but then where would Shakespeare be?
No spoilers here, but I will say the only disappointment, for me, was in how neatly the book was wrapped up. That may be a 1960s thing. Not sure. But even without the tidiness of the last 10% the first 90% makes it a wonderful, thoughtful read.

A well deserved Hugo

This is my first Delaney, and I love it to pieces. The scene where Rydra recruits her crew is low on action but beautifully detailed. The concept of such a rich and nuanced and concise language, and the idea that you can use a language as such a subtle weapon, is Hugo worthy on its own, and Rydra's interactions with Butcher make for a seriously thought provoking conversation.
If you were to criticize this book, you could say that the action is a little disjointed. This is a book about an idea and about characters, where the plot takes a back seat. If that's a problem then this book is probably not for you.

Worth a second read... Someday.

Well. This was a really interesting book. The most interesting for me, was about how language can control you or at the very least determines your personality to a certain degree.

There are some very dated things (the book was written in the 60's after all), like telephone booths, cassette tapes and the like. But otherwise, very progressive and future oriented.

I read this aloud to my husband, which was sometimes difficult. Some things were only effective when reading the, with your own eyes...

Excellent Overall Resource

While this book covers a popular topic, it is an excellent source of primary resources from the time -- such as speeches -- divided into important topics, such as Women's Liberation, The Great Society and Vietnam. Gathering information on the topics included from all perspectives (right, left and center) can often be difficult -- never mind all in one book! The appendices include poll results and a statistical profile of the 1960s. The book also contains a good index.
This book is wonderful as it gathers the ideologies of the 1960s into a book that both students can use and adults can enjoy, and that the materials are mostly primary sources. This alone sets it apart from many other books about the decade.

Comprehensive book on all sports!!

The book has practical tips for coaches, trainers, athletes and therapists. Provided excellent information on prevention, evaluation, and treatment prescriptions for professional and amateur athletes including weekend warriors. The book has a sport specific approach to biomechanics, peak performance enhancement tips, injury prevention and rehabilitation. I like Martial Arts and the book had great pictures to help prevent injuries. The golf chapter also really helped my swing and took my shoulder pain away. Would highly recommend.
