If you are looking at this book chances are you already have a command center and want to improve how it functions. How do you start? A section called "Improvement Recommendations" will get you started. The author recommends:
(1) identify all manual tasks
(2) identify failures by type
(3) use database space management package
(4) implement automated failure recovery
(5) identify all stops
(6) implement self-service desk
(7) replace manual check-off list by automated real-time monitoring.

What metrics should a good monitoring system collect? On pages 99-101 the author provides a list of suggestions. Chapter 9 concentrates on Alerts and how to reduce them. Chapter 10 contains case studies. Case studies 1,5,6 talk about a poorly managed command centers and improvements. Case studies 2,3,4 discuss various aspects of merging several command centers.

Is your business ready to handle a natural disaster? What tasks need to be automated? What contingency plans need to be in place? How to organize your command center for efficient operation? How to reduce a back log of problems? Proactive IT Monitoring provides a guide to address these issues.

Gr 4–8—Riordan's ever-popular mythology series that resonates so strongly with reluctant readers and those who yearn for action-packed adventure now have the option to follow the story in graphic novel format. If the traditional narrative version of The Lost Hero (Disney-Hyperion, 2010) hit the ground running, it is nothing compared to what awaits readers in a sequential art format. It takes fewer than 10 pages for the story to start with a [quite literal] bang, and it relents very infrequently thereafter. Powell does an excellent job of adapting the original story into pictorial format, hitting all of the high points and representing all of the major details in the drawings, so little is lost. For those unfamiliar with Riordan's storytelling, they will receive a healthy introduction to his easy-to-follow story lines that teach with great accuracy the mythologies that students will undoubtedly learn in the classroom but with such fun and ease that it will hardly feel like school. Readers who are new to reading comic books will be no less entertained; there are a few pages here and there that may make following the panels in order a touch challenging, but they will catch on quickly. Really a different approach to the Heroes of Olympus but I enjoyed seeing the characters and monsters come a live in colored comic book form. I could follow the story and helped bring back certain memories while reading the last book of this series. I'm still waiting for the last two books of the first series so hurry up.

Great comic

Two things, playing off each other, make a comic great: a script that lives up to the art, and art that lives up to the script. It's distressingly easy to find each living down to the other. In this case, though, Riordan's story has proven, widespread appeal. But, more importantly for me, it has Powell's artwork. In March, he brought to life Congressman Lewis's experiences in the freedom marches of the 1950s and 60s. In his own work, like Swallow Me Whole, he achieves something unique: if comics (or 'sequential art,' if you must) represent a literature, Powell is among the first of its poets.

So, Riordan's story doesn't quite give him the beyond-sanity range of his own scripts, or the wrenching reality of Lewis's. Even so, the raw energy and borderline madness of normal teenage years, let alone paranormal, give Powell plenty to work with. Unlike the other work I've seen, this involved a colorist to enhance his rich ink drawings. It is an improvement, I think, but I'll never turn down Powell's unadorned B&W - and I'll never turn down his own writing underneath that very worthy artwork.

Riordan's story is more than passable (though I haven't read the original). Powell's artwork eases the transition from novel to comic script, and holds interest in itself. But, even with all these good parts going, I still can't give it that fifth star. A fair few comics in the last few decades have really pushed the medium, in what it says and how it looks. For all the goodness here, it doesn't quite push either.

real support for the migraine soul

Andrew Levy eloquently conveys the inner world of a migraine sufferer. It was interesting to read about the many historical figures who suffered migraines, but as one who has read just about every "headache" book, it was his personal story that reached me the most.
As migraine sufferers we can find guides to what medications might help, what foods to maybe avoid, etc, but never have I come across such a gripping, relatable account of what it's REALLY like to live with migraine.
In reading his memoir I found comfort. I also was surprised at how he would say something in words that I had felt so many times during a severe attack. I think my favorite quote is near the end of the book where he says: "The only person who loves sunlight more than someone who loves sunlight is someone who must ration it." You see, that quote would only make sense at first read to a migraine sufferer.
I hope this book finds it's way into many a migraineur's hands...and hearts, like it did mine.

Not Just for Migraineurs

Part memoir, part history, part medical journal, part literary criticism. Andy Levy weaves all of this into a book that is as entertaining as it is informational, and for those who have silently suffered migraines for years, I think that the book could provide a sort of validation that their suffering is real.

In order to combat his own severe migraines, Levy dives into the subject, reading as much as his headaches will allow him, and then parses that knowledge out to us as if telling his story could be the cure.

He provides stories about historical figures whose migraines affected (positively and negatively) their contribution to society, including the possibility that St. Paul's conversion might have been the result of severe migraine, or that Alice in Wonderland was Lewis Carroll's attempt to describe the a migraine experience.

At the heart of this book, though, is the personal account of Levy's own battle. And it is here, that the book is most poignant. It is here that Levy, the migraineur, lets down the guard and invites the reader into his world. It is here where fellow migraine sufferers can take heart and believe that their own pain is valid.

Levy points out that 12% of the U.S. population suffers from migraines. So, if you don't suffer them, you know someone who does, and this book will help you understand their daily struggle to cope with the disease.

There can be life when you have migraines.

I really liked how Andrew Levy uses his book to capture the struggles of living with migraine along with a historical journey of migraine treatments of the past. He also writes about artists and personalities throughout history who also had migraine such Virginia Wolf, Van Gogh, Freud, and even Elvis.

Living with chronic daily migraine, I was interested to learn about how migraine has influenced literature, music and even religion. I had no idea how migraine had permeated the realm of artists like Van Gogh and writers like Emily Dickinson, nor was I aware that the book "Alice in Wonderland" was about migraine symptoms experienced by the Louis Carroll.

On a personal note, Levy explores the effects migraines have on relationships, exposing the range of emotions one has to go through in trying to maintain a relationship with a loved one when you are in chronic pain.

This book really expanded my knowledge of migraines impact on the world, and it made me feel not so alone with living with this illness. It also gave me hope that there can be life and positive creativity even when you have migraines.

A nice, pocket-sized volume with some good tips about mindfulness.

It's a nice, pocket-sized little volume with some good tips about mindfulness. It goes on a bit about food and that began to feel a little tedious (esp considering the original audience was a prison wherein the prisoners are probably served subpar food over which they have no control), but overall, Thich Nhat Hanh is a gentle teacher whose positivity and love are infectious. I was particularly interested in his discussions about tending to your anger. He has lived through so much, so he speaks from a real place. Recommended.

Fantastic!

Thich Nhat Hanh is one of my favorite Buddhist teachers. This book was written from a visit to a prison, where he and his sangha wanted to help inmates develop a more peaceful life even behind bars. It gives wonderful teachings and advice for everyone wanting to find a more peaceful way of being by offering ways to change one's perspective and develop meditation practice - meditation can be done in many ways and this book is a gem!
