Very Readable
By Malcolm
You know how the last dozen Liam Neeson movies have basically had him casting the same character in a slightly different situation? The Isolator is like that. If you like Reki Kawahara's works, you'll like this, and you should definitely give it a shot. If not, you probably won't enjoy it. I, personally, like Kawahara's writing style (as well as Liam Neeson movies) and found this to be a fun little read. I emphasize little, because the plot doesn't stop for breathers. No filler pages here, folks. The characters are pretty one dimensional, you can pretty much predict the plot page by page, and there really aren't any twists, but it's something fairly original, and sets up what I believe could end up being a good series. That being said, it's not his first (or second) priority, and depending on sales and the whims of the author may never see a second volume. If there is one, I'll be buying it.
I don't really care about the art in light novels all that much, but if you're worried about it, worry not. It's very nice, and in my opinion is actually kinf of needed for the the antagonist, who I will not spoil anything about other than to say I would have had no idea how to imagine him without a visual aid.

A fun story, well worth the read.
By David Reagan
If you're a fan of the supernatural power up genre, you'll enjoy this. Reki Kawahara is a really good author. I've been a huge Sword Art Online fan every since it first came out Crunchyroll (to the point I keep pre-ordering the books as they come out here in the US), Accel World is amazing, and this series is off to an excellent start as well. Now, if only we had simulpublish like we have simulcast... :)
Considering what Reki has done with characterizing his SAO and Aceel World characters, I'm looking forward to seeing where he goes with these.
And, of course, more details on what the Eye's are...
Anyway, it's a fun story, well worth the read.

Great Pick Up From YenOn, And Another Literary Masterpiece From Kawahara
By Tristan A. Hayes
Kawahara is a writing machine. I was afraid picking it up that it would feel like a regurgitation of his other stories or that it would feel like his third series that was an after thought. After reading it, I must say that I was wrong. I felt like there were no similarities at all to Sword Art Online. The only slight similarity there is to a previously written Kawahara work is the nature of the Eye's abilities manifesting in an individual being similar to the subconscious generation of the avatar that one uses in Accel World, beyond that its a real world non MMO game not even set in the far off future. I greatly enjoyed it. Actually in comparison to Accel World this book feels much faster paced and a bit more gripping as I was able to get through 100 pages in just two days of reading, while Accel World typically takes me much longer at times. Kawahara is really focused in this one with little to no tangents present.
The magic battling, Isolator, story focuses a lot on the trauma that the two characters of choice have in this volume. One is the antagonist who one could easily feel the pain and stress was felt while the other is the lead who was caught up in a bad place at a wrong time. I could see how one would just want to be isolated and forget about their past and everything. Though Im glad that we dont stay in that state for the whole volume and series with the lead character showing some growth mentally and emotionally by the time the last page is read.
The art was great with good looking characters. DD was my favorite. The writing from the translator had no detectable errors. The afterward from Kawahara was translated as well. Though beyond that there were no extras or anything (beyond the color pages at the start). I was impressed that it was a hardcover volume too.
Only flaw is that it seemed Kawahara is unsure if it will get a second volume or become a series. I hope it sold well enough so that the publisher will allow it to continue. Though I guess it wouldnt come out as fast as Accel World and Sword Art Online volumes since he wants to maintain his six books a year schedule.
