One of my most treasured books...

Of all the works I own on Christian spirituality and theology, this is one of my most treasured. I am Catholic, so for me it has been a very interesting excursion into the world of Eastern Orthodoxy via my readings in this.

8 figures are presented, all encompassing a broad overview of Russian Orthodox spirituality. My only quibble is that such major figures as Paisius Velichkovsky and Theophan the Recluse are not ignored but certainly not included. Instead, along with other major Eastern saints such as John of Kronstadt, we get the writings of Avvakum and one Father Yelchaninov. There writings are by no means bad in the least - Yelchaninov is brilliant actually - but it just seems a little strange to excise Theophan the Recluse from a book like this. Just a little quibble though.

Overall, this book is one I will turn to time and time again. It is beautifully packaged, and not a page is wasted - all of the writings in here are brilliant, edifying, and nourishing.

A desert island book, to be sure.

Excellent but very advanced techniques

This is one of the best cookbooks I've ever come across, but it would definately be in the same level as Gordan Ramsay's Three Star Chef cookbook because the techniques are usually advanced, the preparation is fairly complex and the list of specialist ingredients required can be either overwhelming, difficult to source or simply downright expensive.

However, for those who have mastered regular homestyle cooking and even dabbled a bit in trying to make dishes a bit more exciting or advanced, this book is definately designed to take you to the next level. One overall secret appears to be preparation of dish one day (or more) in advanced. For example, a simple thai-style marinated pork belly involves some degree of cooking, preparation and marinating the day before you intend to finish off the cooking and final preparation of the dish.

The book itself is beautifully well presented and provides some good "chef-philosophy" from Paul Wilson about setting up his iconic restaurants and constructing unique dishes.

The dish that I regard as perfect is the soft polenta, poached egg and truffles dish, the recipe of which is included in this book. This recipe alone makes the book worth the money.

Paul Wilson would have to be one of the world's best chef's - focusing on premium ingredients, great flavours, avoiding too many complicated flavour combinations in a more casual and relaxed atmosphere, rather than cuttered formal dining.

Highly recommended purchase for aspiring chefs, but certainly not one for the beginner.

Be sure to give the lemongrass and lime prawns a whirl - it was stunning.

I am a big fan of books that actually include case studies of companies that implemented the techniques taught. This is one of those books. With the rise of blogs, wikis and social media, old school marketing is nowhere near what it used to be. No matter what industry you're in or size of business, this book offers gems of knowledge you can immediately apply. It may also have you re-consider your marketing budget.

WORTHWHILE READ!

A really interesting read. It's written in an easy-going style and the authors seem to know what they're talking about. It's very B2B focused - so much so that they have devoted a specific chapter on B2C - and I found myself questioning if some of their assumptions apply to the everyday consumer as well. In the end I decided they did, but the book is really for those trying to understand how influencers affect purchase decisions in business.

I've tried to read other books on influence but they proved too dry and science-based. This is a much better read, whether you're new to the subject or experienced. It also has case studies of actual examples showing how companies have identified and worked with influencers. I'd recommend it.

This is an exceptional book about a very holy man, a priest tending to the spiritual needs of his Marines in Vietnam. Before I begin let me say that nothing in this world happens without God's knowledge, direction, order or God letting it happen for a reason. We all have free will but if God does not want it to happen it does not happen. Yes, there is such a thing as probability and outcome but it is up to God. In God's plan we are not God. We only report for duty to carry out His plan. God has a mission for all of us to do before we are called home to heaven. Having said that let me say that "The Grunt Padre" by Father Daniel Mode a fellow priest provides a revealing picture of a holy priest who went about doing God's work. The facts are that Father Vincent Robert Capodanno; Servant of God was a witness to God's goodness and love from February 13, 1929 to September 4, 1967. In the last few years he was a United States Navy Roman Catholic Chaplain in Vietnam and for his actions in the war was posthumous recipient of America's highest military decoration the Medal of Honor. Navy Chaplain Capodanno was killed in Vietnam in l967 when he accompanied a Marine search unit in operation swift. The Marines were outnumbered 2500 to 500 marines. Father Capodanno was killed while protecting a corpsman that was administering first aid to a wounded Marine. Father Capodanno even though wounded refused to leave battle area to assist his Marines. For his actions Padre Capodanno received posthumously the Congressional Medal of Honor. He was also awarded for other actions while in Vietnam, the Bronze star and 3 purple hearts. Father Capodanno was the most recognized and respected chaplain in the Vietnam War. Memorials and buildings have been constructed throughout the world that bears his name. He was truly a servant of God and a real hero. This brings to mind from Holy Scripture: "No greater love hath no man than to lay down one’s life for his friends."------ John 15: 13

The book "The Grunt Padre" covers all aspects of his life from early childhood to the calling from God to the vocation of becoming a priest. The sacrifices he made all his life to reach his goals. One crucial character trait was the thinking of others. He always went out of his way to help others; this priest has touched many people who knew him or knew of him here on earth. Some miracles have been reported through the intercession of Blessed Father Vincent Capodanno. A movement is in the works for the church to declare him a saint. But this does not happen overnight for a thorough investigation must be accomplish. This could take years. Meanwhile the cause of sainthood goes forward and the following prayer can be used to promote his cause:

Heavenly Father, source of all that is holy, in every age you raise up men and women who live lives of heroic love and service. You have blessed your Church through the life of Vincent Capodanno, Vietnam War Navy chaplain, who had the “courage of a lion, and the faith of a martyr.1” He was killed in action offering medical assistance to the wounded and administering last rites to the dying on the battlefield. Through his prayer, his courage, his faith, and his pastoral care he is an example of laying down one’s life for one’s friends: Jesus told us that there is no greater love than this. If it be your will, may he be proclaimed a saint! We ask this through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

I gave "The Grunt Padre" five stars because I found it very inspirational and humbling to read about how one man can do so much if he offers it all up to God. Many people have questions about us Catholics that could be answered within the pages of this book. It is a book that you may read once but then keep going back to it for from its pages you can hear God talking to you. It is also a good news story. You just might learn why God lets things happen to good people. Much of the bad in this world happens because of the lack of love. Without love the ugly head of the evil one surface and we are left only with a vacuum and that is filled with strife, wars, hatred, envy, darkness, terrorism and all the rest of the bad things we see happening in this world. But Father Vincent Capodanno went about spreading the good news of Our Lord wherever he happened to be. With God and his guidance we have salvation. I strongly recommend this book to all who want to read of what is possible with God. God bless you all.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. The bravery, dedication, and outright love this man had for " His Marines" is overwhelming. If we could all be like this man the world would indeed be a much better place. I am so grateful that God chose this padre to serve. What a fantastic book and and man!!

There can be no doubt that Ms. Steele has solved the mystery!

I originally purchased the Kindle edition of this book but wanted the paperback version in hand before I offered my review. This is the type of book that has great illustrations but they are very difficult to view with a Kindle, so I highly recommend getting the hard copy.

Now for my review: I enjoy 3 things in a book. One, a great mystery; two, it has to be non-fiction and; three, I love the truth. This book satisfies all three of those quests! Ms. Steele has done painstaking research only to boil everything down into an easy to read and enjoyable explanation of the rich history of what really happened on Oak Island. And it is a piece of history that "mysteriously" fell into a black hole only to, once again, see the light of day - thanks to Joy Steele.

I suspect there will be a lot of controversy stirred up by the findings of this book since many people have risked lives and fortunes to find the treasure at Oak Island. It will be a hard blow to find out the truth.

I liken it to a man who practiced every religion on earth in his quest to find God, only to discover that God himself reached out to man and provided a savior and, in the end, man can add nothing to this work. While this truth is delightful to those in need, it is also a hard pill to swallow for the self-righteous.

A good read - highly recommend!

A Must-read for treasure seekers!

Treasure seekers would do well to read this book before spending another dime on Oak Island digs. Ms. Steele's solution seems to be so much more than a theory that I can't help believing she has nailed it. The material presented here is well researched and backed up by printed documents from the era in which the original pits were dug as well as supporting evidence to explain the presence of other artifacts, stone markings and tree carvings found on the island. Was there treasure on the island at one time? At this point, it's anyone's guess. After reading this book and 3 others about Oak Island, my feeling is that if there had been buried treasure it is long gone, but it was certainly never placed in the aptly named 'money pit' which has absorbed the fortunes of so many with no return on their investment. Ms. Steele's carefully researched explanation for the existence of the pit of many layers with tunnels reaching out toward the sea is completely believable.

Will this end all the suspicion about Buried Treasure on Oak Island?...I doubt it.

The Oak Island Myatery is probably Canada's greatest unsolved mystery about buried treasure.It has been in the news for so long that it is now part of Canada's heritage.
There have been many books,papers,documentries,newspaper and magazine articles and reams of radio and television programs about it.
This book is probably the latest one that proposes a solution,to the riddle that has fired the imagination,driven men to ruin ,and even death in trying to answer the question;what's down there?
I have been following the story of Oak Island ever since my days in High School in the early 1950's.I even visited the island when there was a lull in searching,sometime in the early 60's.
While there has never beel very many years when someone was trying to solve the mystery,and there was always some artifact or whatever that continued to be found;and so ,even though the "evidence" continues to mount;the answer still eludes solving.
I wrote a Review on one of the more extensive books about this story,"The Lost Treasure of The Knights Templar" by Steven Sora on August 26,2008.Although that book claims to know the solution,which is ,by the way,only one of many;it is a good review of the attempts to solve the mystery and come up with a solution.
Of all the soulutions that have been proposed,this is one that is completely different and there is very good discussion about much of the evidence and items that have been found.There is al lot about the history of what went on on Oak Island,and how the idea that it may have been used by the British as a place to obtain naval stores,masts,tar,turpentine,etc.,The aurhor has researched this with experts who are very knowledgable of similar sites and operations in other areas.
Overall, the author is pretty convinced that she has the solution to the enigma,and deals in detail with much of the evidence.
Whether all will agree,remains to be seen.Personally,I found the "box sled" very convincing that Tar Making may have taken place there,but That being said,the history of the British,the use of slavery,the South sea Company,and the naval stores are all revelations and interesting,the science and explanations of the depth of "The Money Pit" with evidence of platforms every 10 feet and evidence found down to over 170 feet ,was somewhat difficult to understand and convincing.

In the end,this book convinces one that it is quite lokely that tar making operations may well have taken place on Oak Island,but does that exclude any form of other activities such as treasure involved in the very deep "Money Pit",and other sophistticated tunnelling etc.
Tunnelling was very advanced during the 1600 and 1700's by the British and other armies.For instance;in Halifax about 40 miles away,there is a British Fort,"The Citadel".The British constructed a tunnel of several miles out to Mc Nabs Island in the harbor.
The book is a very interesting read and presents a whole new solution to the Oak Island Mystery.My only complaint about the book is that the photographs and illustrations are very poor,some even requiring a magnifying glass to read.There are extensive notes on sources of information;but no Index.There is lots of other information,photographs,illustrations and videos about the Oak Island Mystery on the Net and YouTube.
